Terms of service
These terms cover your use of Plainhand at plainhand.net.
Effective October 1, 2026
Plainhand is operated by Sage Keyes, an individual based in North Carolina, United States ("we" or "us"). By using Plainhand, you agree to these terms.
The service
Plainhand is a prose editor that highlights passages that may read as flat or mechanical. Mechanical checks are free. Deep read, an AI-assisted editorial pass, requires a purchase, except for one free deep read per account on up to 1,500 words and any bonus deep reads earned through invites.
Who can use Plainhand
You must be at least 13 years old to use Plainhand. If you're under 18, you need permission from a parent or guardian to make a purchase.
Your account
Use an accurate email address and keep your password secure. You're responsible for activity on your account. If you think someone else has accessed it, tell us promptly at support@plainhand.net.
Purchases
Deep read is sold in two one-time packs, paid through our payment processor, Stripe: 10 deep reads for $19 (USD), or 2 deep reads for $5 (USD). Reads must be used within 90 days of purchase, and each covers up to 150,000 words. Unused reads expire at the end of the 90 days. Purchases don't renew automatically.
We may change prices for future purchases. A price change never affects a purchase you've already made.
Refunds
You can request a full refund within 14 days of purchase by emailing support@plainhand.net from the email address on your account. A refund ends the deep reads included in that purchase.
Referral rewards
Each account has a personal invite link. When someone creates an account through your link, confirms their email, and completes their own free deep read, you and they each receive one bonus deep read, covering up to 1,500 words. Each invited account earns a reward only once, and inviting yourself doesn't qualify. Each person can receive at most 10 bonus deep reads through invites in total, whether as the one inviting or the one invited. Bonus deep reads have no cash value and can't be transferred. We may remove bonus deep reads obtained by misusing invites, for example through accounts created only to earn rewards.
Your writing
You keep all rights to anything you submit. You give us permission to process it only as needed to provide the service, for example sending it for analysis when you run a deep read. We don't claim ownership of your writing, and we don't use it to train AI models.
What Plainhand is and isn't
Plainhand's findings are suggestions about style, based on automated pattern checks and AI analysis. They can be wrong, and whether to act on them is your call. Plainhand does not determine whether a text was written by a person or by AI, and its results should not be used as evidence of authorship.
Acceptable use
Don't use Plainhand to:
- break the law or infringe anyone else's rights
- get around usage limits or payment
- interfere with, overload, or attack the service
- copy, resell, or automate access to the service
Changes and availability
We may change, suspend, or discontinue features, and we'll try to give notice of significant changes. If we discontinue Deep read while you have a purchase with unused deep reads, we'll refund that purchase.
Ending your use
You can stop using Plainhand at any time and ask us to delete your account. We may suspend or close accounts that break these terms.
Disclaimer
To the extent the law allows, Plainhand is provided "as is" and "as available," without warranties of any kind.
Limitation of liability
To the extent the law allows, we aren't liable for indirect, incidental, or consequential damages, and our total liability for any claim relating to Plainhand is limited to the amount you paid us in the 12 months before the claim.
Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of the State of North Carolina, United States.
Changes to these terms
If we change these terms, we'll update the date at the top of this page. Continuing to use Plainhand after a change means you accept the updated terms.
